In the blinding, sun-baked expanse of the Mojave Salt Flats, society lies in ruins following the sudden collapse of global networks. Nolan Hayes, a gaunt, naive apprentice mechanic, scrapes by searching for salvage. He lives in the shadow of a colossal, buried military secret: Goliath-7, the last functional Deep Core Titan, buried deep beneath the shifting white sands. Massive geothermal tremors rupture the flats, releasing toxic steam and signaling an imminent deep-earth volcanic eruption that will obliterate the surviving subterranean shelters. Desperate, Nolan and the adaptive mechanic Chloe Sterling locate the Titan's access hatch and breach the seal, accidentally activating Goliath-7's core and waking the stubborn, holographic ghost of General Thaddeus Sterling. To prevent the eruption, Nolan must pilot Goliath-7 down into the crushing, neon-orange magma chambers. Because the mecha's old cockpit utilizes an obsolete neural-link interface, Nolan must sync his mind with the hostile General. The General demands cold, militaristic sacrifice, mocking Nolan's salvage tactics. As the heat climbs, the sync burns Nolan's personal memories to power the mecha's thermal shield, causing him to forget his past. At the volcanic valve, the pressure peaks and the shielding fails. Nolan refuses to leave Chloe behind on the surface as the General demands. Witnessing the boy's pure empathy, the General relents, using his own code to shield Nolan's mind from terminal neural feedback. The core is sealed, but the General fades forever, leaving Nolan alive but carrying the ghost's military memories.
