Camp Muddy Creek is a miserable, rain-slicked Union outpost bogged down in swamp fever and military despair. Here, Private Barney Todd, an absolute hypochondriac, hoards hand-knit scarves and tin teakettles, convinced every minor skin rash is the deadly 'Swamp Rot' while driving the practical military doctor McPhee to the brink of insanity with daily self-diagnoses. While searching through confiscated Confederate gear, Barney discovers a gorgeous leather-bound botanical journal written by a captured Southern saboteur. Misinterpreting its elegant sketches of lethal nightshade and warning markers as an elite holistic gut-health guide, Barney immediately brews a steaming cup of poison hemlock tea to cure a scratchy throat. To Dr. McPhee's sheer horror, Barney doesn't drop dead; instead, the micro-dosed toxic herbs cure his rashes, grant him glowing skin, and render him completely immune to the camp's rampant malaria. Enraged by this un-soldierly wellness nonsense, Captain Stone assigns Barney to the most disease-ridden swamp guard-post to break his spirit, unaware that Confederate saboteur Silas Finch is sneaking back to poison the camp's main drinking well. When Finch poisons the camp's water supply, Barney mistakenly chugs the entire contaminated bucket to balance his gut bacteria, completely neutralizing the lethal venom while complaining about the mineral balance. Seeing Finch surrender in absolute terror of this immortal Union soldier, Captain Stone reluctantly promotes Barney to Chief Sanitary Officer, forcing the whole regiment to drink green swamp smoothies.
